Snow Removal for Pittsburgh’s Real Winters
Pittsburgh winters don’t follow a schedule. One week it’s 50 degrees and sunny. The next, you’re waking up at 5 a.m. to six inches of wet, heavy snow piled against the garage door and a layer of black ice coating every step between your front door and the street. The Pittsburgh metro averages about 44 inches of snowfall per season — enough to make life difficult for anyone who doesn’t have a plan.
T&T Landscaping provides snow removal and ice management across Coraopolis, Moon Township, and the surrounding 15108 area. We handle residential driveways and sidewalks, small commercial lots, and everything in between. When the snow falls, we show up — on time, with the right equipment, and with a clear plan to get your property safe and passable before the morning starts.
We’re not a seasonal fly-by-night operation that shows up in November and disappears in March. We’re the same crew that handles your lawn care, your landscaping, and your spring cleanup. When winter arrives, we shift gears and take care of the snow. Your property gets year-round attention from a team that already knows the layout — where the driveway ends, where the garden beds are, where ice tends to form.
What’s included in a snow removal service?
Our standard residential snow removal service covers the full scope of what needs to happen after a snowfall:
- Driveway plowing or shoveling. The driveway is always the first priority. We clear it end to end, including the apron where the plow typically pushes a wall of street snow across your entrance.
- Sidewalk and walkway clearing. Front walks, side paths, and any paved route between your door and the street get cleared to bare pavement.
- Steps and stoops. Shoveled and treated with ice melt. Steps are where slip-and-fall injuries happen most often, so we don’t shortcut this.
- Ice management. Salt, calcium chloride, or magnesium chloride applied to all cleared surfaces to prevent refreeze. The de-icing material we use depends on the temperature and the surface type.
- Snow stacking. Snow gets placed where it won’t block sightlines, won’t melt into your foundation, and won’t collapse onto anything important when it thaws. Smart stacking matters more than most people realize.
Per-Push vs. Seasonal Contracts
Which pricing model makes more sense for my property?
We offer two pricing structures for residential snow removal, and each one fits a different kind of winter.
Per-push pricing means you pay each time we come out. Your fee is based on driveway size and snowfall depth (light snow costs less than a heavy dump). This works well for homeowners who want to control costs event by event, who have short driveways, or who handle light dustings themselves and only want us for the bigger storms. The trade-off is unpredictability — a heavy winter can add up fast, and per-push clients aren’t guaranteed first-priority response during major events.
Seasonal contracts lock in a flat rate for the entire winter season — typically November through March — regardless of how many times we come out. If it snows 15 times or 5 times, you pay the same amount. Seasonal clients get priority response during storms, guaranteed service levels, and predictable budgeting. For most homeowners in the Coraopolis and Moon Township area, a seasonal contract ends up being the better deal in an average Pittsburgh winter. It also means you’re locked in before the first flake falls, so there’s no scrambling to find a crew when the forecast turns ugly in January.
For commercial snow removal — parking lots, office complexes, retail plazas, HOA common areas — we quote per property based on square footage, trigger depth, and expected frequency. Commercial clients almost always run on seasonal contracts because of liability requirements and the need for guaranteed response times.
Ice Management
Why does de-icing matter as much as plowing?
Plowing clears the bulk of the snow. Ice management handles what plowing can’t — the thin layer of packed snow and ice that bonds to concrete and asphalt and turns every surface into a hazard. In western PA, where daytime temperatures can swing 20 degrees between morning and afternoon, melted snow refreezes into black ice every single night during cold stretches. Without proper de-icing, a plowed driveway can be just as dangerous as an unplowed one by the next morning.
T&T Landscaping uses three primary de-icing materials depending on conditions:
- Rock salt (sodium chloride). The standard workhorse. Effective down to about 15°F, affordable, and widely available. We use rock salt for most applications above that temperature threshold. It’s the most cost-effective option for driveways and parking lots.
- Calcium chloride. Works at much lower temperatures — effective down to -25°F — and melts ice faster than rock salt. We switch to calcium chloride during Pittsburgh’s coldest stretches when rock salt stops working. It costs more, but it performs when nothing else will.
- Magnesium chloride. Gentler on concrete and vegetation than rock salt, effective to about 0°F. We recommend this for newer concrete driveways, stamped patios, and areas adjacent to planting beds where salt runoff could damage shrubs.
We also carry sand for traction on steep driveways and areas where chemical de-icers aren’t appropriate. For properties with pavers — paver patios, paver driveways — we adjust our de-icing approach to protect joint sand and avoid surface staining.
Equipment and Response
How quickly do you respond after a snowfall?
Response time depends on the storm. For a standard overnight snowfall, we start routes before dawn and aim to have residential clients cleared by the time they need to leave for work. During extended storms — the kind that drop snow for 8 or 12 hours — we may make multiple passes to keep accumulation manageable rather than waiting for the storm to end.
Our snow plowing equipment is sized for the work we do:
- Truck-mounted plows for driveways and small commercial lots
- Walk-behind snow blowers for sidewalks, narrow paths, and areas where a plow can’t reach
- Hand shoveling for steps, stoops, and tight areas around landscaping
- Spreaders for de-icing material — tailgate spreaders for lots, hand-push spreaders for walks and drives
Seasonal contract clients get priority during storms. Per-push clients are serviced in order of signup. During major events — anything over 8 inches — we focus on clearing all contracted properties first before taking per-push requests. That priority distinction is one of the main reasons seasonal contracts exist.
Residential Snow Removal in the 15108 Area
What makes snow removal in Coraopolis and Moon Township different?
The terrain matters. Coraopolis sits in the Ohio River valley, and Moon Township spreads across the hills and ridges above it. That means steep driveways, sloped streets, and properties where snow and ice don’t just sit — they slide. A driveway with a 15% grade that hasn’t been treated becomes impassable after an inch of freezing rain. The hills around Montour Run and the neighborhoods between University Boulevard and Brodhead Road have some of the steepest residential grades in the area.
We know these neighborhoods because we work in them year-round. We know which driveways are too steep for a standard plow and need a different approach. We know which sidewalks face north and stay icy all day because the sun never hits them. We know which streets the borough plows last and where the street plow tends to bury the end of your driveway with a wall of compacted slush.
That familiarity means we don’t just plow and leave. We think about where we’re pushing the snow and how it’s going to behave when it melts. We treat the spots we know will refreeze. We clear the mailbox area so the carrier can get to it. The details are what separate a good snow removal service from a truck that just pushes snow around.
Commercial Snow Removal
What do commercial properties need from a snow removal service?
Commercial properties have different requirements than residential homes, and the stakes are higher. A business that can’t be accessed by customers or employees loses revenue for every hour it stays buried. A parking lot with uncleared ice is a liability claim waiting to happen. Municipal codes in Allegheny County municipalities — including Coraopolis and Moon Township — require commercial property owners to clear sidewalks within a specified time after snowfall ends.
Commercial snow removal from T&T Landscaping includes:
- Parking lot plowing — full-lot clearing with attention to fire lanes, handicap spaces, and loading zones
- Sidewalk and entrance clearing — every customer-facing walkway cleared to bare pavement
- Ice management — pre-treatment before storms when possible, de-icing application after every clearing
- Snow stacking and hauling — snow pushed to designated areas that don’t reduce parking capacity; hauling available if lot space is limited
- Documentation — timestamped service logs for your records, available for liability and insurance documentation
Every commercial contract includes a defined trigger depth — usually 1 to 2 inches — and guaranteed response time. We’ll have your lot cleared and treated before your first employee arrives.
How much does snow removal cost in Pittsburgh?
Pricing depends on the property, the service level, and the contract structure. Here are general ranges for the Pittsburgh metro area:
- Residential per-push (standard driveway): $35 – $75 per visit, depending on driveway size and snow depth
- Residential seasonal contract: $400 – $900 for the full winter season
- Sidewalk-only per-push: $20 – $40 per visit
- Ice management add-on: $15 – $35 per application (often bundled with plowing)
- Commercial lots: Quoted per property — factors include lot size, trigger depth, number of visits expected, and de-icing requirements
These ranges are general estimates. The actual cost for your property depends on driveway length, grade, accessibility, and how comprehensive you want the service to be. T&T Landscaping provides free quotes — call or text (412) 397-8004 or request an estimate online before the first snowfall.
When to Lock In Your Snow Removal Service
When should I sign up for snow removal?
Early fall. Seriously — the best time to arrange snow removal service is September or October, before the first storm hits. Here’s why:
Every snow removal company in the Pittsburgh area has a limited number of clients they can serve per storm. Routes are planned geographically — we group clients by neighborhood so we can move efficiently from property to property. Once those routes are full, we stop taking new clients for the season. If you wait until December to call, you may find that every reputable crew is already committed.
Signing up early also gives us time to walk your property, note any special requirements (steep grades, tight turns, landscape features to avoid), and set up your service agreement before the stress of the first storm. You’ll have a clear understanding of what you’re paying, what triggers a service visit, and what time frame to expect. No surprises, no scrambling.
If you’re reading this during winter and haven’t locked in a service yet, call anyway — (412) 397-8004. We may still have capacity, and if we don’t, we’ll tell you honestly. For next season, get on the list early.
